The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ondo State has directed its members not to participate in the local government election fixed for April 23 by the State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC).
The party’s Chairman, Mr Duerinimi Isaacs Kekemeke who disclosed this yesterday at the Leaders’ Consultative meeting yesterday hinged the party’s decision on its lack of faith in the leadership of the state electoral body just as he unveiled the party’s plan to conduct party primaries to select candidate for the forthcoming governorship election.
The electoral body had given three months notice for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
This according to the ODIEC’s Chairman, Prof Olugbenga Ige would be conducted in all the 18 local government areas and 203 political wards in the state, citing the Local Government Administration, conduct of local government election, Applied Matters Law 2004 and the provisions of the Nigeria Constitution which empowers ODIEC to conduct the election.
He said: “In pursuance of the provision of Section 30 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, I, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, Chairman Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer for Ondo State hereby give notice that elections into the position of chairman and councilor in all the 18 local government council areas of Ondo State shall hold on Saturday 23rd April, 2016.”
But his notice was countered by the APC’s chairman, Kekemeke, who described as mere selection process.
