Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, has assured President Goodluck Jonathan that he will get at least 1.6 million votes in the February 14 election.
Akpabio said this during the Peoples Democratic Party presidential rally in Akwa Ibom, on Friday.
“Mr. President, 1.6 million Akwa Ibom votes await you on February 14. We don’t want a government that will only build prisons. We want a government that will build schools,” he said.
Jonathan, while addressing the large crowd of supporters, said PDP governors had performed better than their All Progressives Congress counterparts.
The President said the over N30bn stadium built by the Akwa Ibom State government was a proof that the PDP was ahead of others.
He said, “We give our governors that freedom and freewill to do what is right for the people because they were voted for by their people. We don’t dictate who gets contracts from our governors; we don’t dictate who gets appointments from our governors.
“Our governors govern their state with the help of indigenes of the state and make sure that the resources of the state are used judiciously to help the state. We don’t ask them to bring resources to us in Abuja. They spend the state funds in the state to develop the state. That is why PDP states are doing very well.
“All PDP states have state-owned universities. There are some states that don’t have state-owned universities and they will tell you they are changing. Changing to what? I don’t know where the change is going.”
Jonathan also told party supporters that those canvassing for change should tell Nigerians what they did when they had the opportunity of ruling the country.
The President, however, promised that he would convert the Maritime Academy of Nigeria into a maritime university as well as ensure that the Ibaka Deep Seaport came into reality, if elected into power for a second term
