The family of late world famous writer Professor Chinua Achebe has disowned the Chinua Achebe Centre over attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari. Sahara Reporters writes that the family said it was not a part of the Centre’s recent onslaught on President Buhari over his controversial decision to borrow a foreign loan of around $29.96bn
The development follows reports on Sunday, November 20 on some online media platforms (not NAIJ.com) that the Centre has moved to block Buhari’s $29.96bn loan.
The Chinua Achebe Center for Leadership and Development (CACLD) has reportedly urged the World Bank not to grant the $29.9 billion loan being requested by President Muhammadu Buhari.
It warned against granting the loan request in a letter reportedly addressed to Dr. Jim Yong Kim, President, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) in Washington-DC.
But now Sahara Reporters that the Achebe family says the Centre is not speaking their mind nor following the line of their late patriarch and that it has no relationship whatsoever with the body.
The Centre is located at the Bard College, which was founded in 1860 as St. Stephen’s College and is a private liberal arts college in Annandale-on-Hudson, a hamlet in Dutchess County, New York, United States, in the town of Red Hook.
On its official website, the CACLD said it was:
“established in 2005 to continue the legacy of the late Chinua Achebe, who taught at Bard from 1990 to 2011, and to serve the future of global Africana arts. Among its goals are to become a center of excellence for the teaching of African literature, to support a new generation of African writers, and to encourage literary/cultural entrepreneurship. Undergraduate students may participate in Center projects, including facilitating events that feature visiting writers, artists, and scholars.”
In 2013, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama delivered the inaugural Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum Lecture at Bard College.
