Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists have killed a Divisional Police Officer, Okezie Okereofor, and 62 others in four villages of Adamawa State.
However, eyewitnesses also said the gunmen, numbering about 300, looked like Fulani herdsmen.
The gunmen attacked five villages in Adamawa State on Sunday.
The villages attacked were located in Girei Local Government Area.
They were Demsare, Wunamokoh, Dikajam, Taboungo and Fawore.
Okereofor was the DPO in charge of Vunokilang Police Station located in one of the towns.
Okereofor, who was transferred to the community from Okigwe in Imo State barely two months ago, was said to have been ambushed alongside other officers and men as they moved into the communities to stop the invaders.
The bodies of the police officers and others killed in the attack, informed sources said, have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
The spokesman of the Adamawa State Police Command, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the development.
Abubakar said Okereofor and his officers and men were attacked while on official duty by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
He said available reports indicated that the attackers looted the villagers’ foodstuff and livestock before setting their homes ablaze.
