The Minister of Transport, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has advised stakeholders in the transport industry to ensure that importation of used vehicles into the country are carried out within the provisions of the law.
Amaechi, who gave the warning in a speech delivered at the strategic action plan and inauguration of the Motor Dealers Association of Nigeria in Abuja, warned stakeholders in the transport industry to operate within the confines of the government stipulated regulations or be sanctioned, adding that the support of the association would not go unnoticed as they provide employment opportunity for the teeming youths of Nigeria.
He said the era of the operators in the industry seeing government activities as avenue where nothing worked was over, stating that stiff penalty henceforth await those cutting canners in the industry. According to him, the government is currently understudying some of the policies put in place by the former administration in order to fine-tune them for the benefit of Nigerians.
The minister, who congratulated the newly elected members of the association, however gave an assurance that the Buhari administration would soon unveil strategic plans in some of the critical sectors.
Earlier, the National president of the Association, Engineer Ajibola Adedoyin had challenged the federal government to holistically carry out a review of its automotive policy in order to avoid the envisaged and the perceived backlash that may bring about failure in the implementation of the policy.
Adedoyin said the automotive policy need to be properly formulated before its implementation, observing that the hasty move taken by the immediate past administration if implemented would throw billions of the tax payers’ money down the drain with an attendance hardship which the policy will bring to the Nigeria people.
“We are not in disagreement with the automotive policy of the former administration, but what we are saying is, if what is needed to be put in place is not done before implementation of such policy.”
