After their thrilling 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich at the Emirates last month Arsenal might at least be entitled to think the hardest part of their attempt to pull off a European miracle was over. Far from it.
The Gunners now travel to Bavaria knowing that they likely need at least a point to keep their Champions League destiny in their own hands. Arsenal supporters may well have one eye on Athens as they follow their side’s away trip; wins for both Olympiakos and Bayern would be a nightmare scenario for Arsene Wenger’s side, as the two sides could play out a draw on matchday five to eliminate their rivals.
As such Arsenal will have to repeat the trick they have so impressively pulled off in their past two trips to the Allianz Arena. Arsene Wenger’s side have never lost at Bayern’s new home, twice performing admirably as they chased surprise results in the second leg of knockout ties.
On each of those occasions, though, they were facing a Bayern side that had already effectively secured an aggregate victory, that were relaxed and that, bar the final five minutes in 2013, were cruising to the next round.
