The Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) on Monday suspended the screening of 16 commissioner nominees submitted to the house for confirmation by Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura over alleged security threat to the lives of the members of the Assembly.
The house passed the resolution after deliberating extensively on a motion moved by Mr. Daniel Ogazi (APC-Kokona East) during the house proceeding in Lafia.
Ogazi, who is also the chairman, House committee on Education, said that the suspension has become necessary given the fact that his life and those of other members of the Education committee investigating alleged admission irregularities by the Vice Chancellor of the Nasarawa state University, Keffi, Prof. Akaro Mainoma, are under serious security threat.
“If you would recall, this House has set up a committee to be chaired by me to investigate the alleged admission scandal at the Nasarawa state University, Keffi on why the 2015/2016 admission list of the university did not favour the indigenes of the state”.
“During our deliberation on October.12, 2015,the house recommended for the immediate indefinite suspension of the state University, Keffi,Vice Chancellor,Prof.Mohammed Akaro-Mainoma over alleged irregularities in the 2015/2016 admissiono pave way for thorough investigation.
“I therefore want to call on you to support my motion to enable the House suspend this screening until adequate security have been provided not only to the members of this committee but to all of us within 24 hours, “he said.
The House Education committee chairman also expressed dismayed over the inability of the university to provide the necessary materials for the investigation due to the interference of the Vice chancellor.
Mr. Mohammed Muluku (PDP-Nassarawa Eggon East) seconded the motion for the suspension of the screening exercise.
Muluku, who is also the vice chairman of the House committee on Education equally lamented the security threat to lives of the members of the committee.
The house unanimously passed the resolution for the suspension of the screening exercise.
The Speaker of the house, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe announced the suspension of the screening of the commissioner nominees and appealed to the state government to provide adequate security to the members of the assembly in the interest of peace.
