A former Minister of Education and Ondo state politician, Dr Olaiya Oni, has died at the age of 74.
Student Pulse gathered from reports that the late minister died on Sunday afternoon at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo.
Reports say Oni, who headed the Ministry of Education under the regime of Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar, from August 1998 to May 1999 had been ill for about three years before his death.
He was reportedly rushed to the hospital where he died about three days ago when his health worsened.
An unnamed source told Sahara Reporters that Oni had long been bedridden at his hometown, Ise Ekiti in Ekiti State.
"He has been bedridden for some months," the source said.
Speaking with the Leadership, an Ondo politician who contested the 2012 governorship election in the state as a Deputy Governorship candidate, Hon. Saka Lawal, said the news of the ex-Minister's death is "devastating and unbelievable".
The deceased was the pioneer Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Ondo state and was later became a chieftain of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
He quit active politics in 2013.
