Hundreds of students of the University of Lagos yesterday staged a protest against bed bug, which they said invaded their campus hostels.
The protest, started from Marire Hall to New Hall comprising Sodeinde Hall, Eni Njoku,Makama Bida Hall, Madam Tinubu Hall, Fagunwa Hall. It was reported that female students did not join in the protest as they were not allowed out of their hostels.
Sodeinde Hall, which usually takes the front stage in any protest, was the first point of call for the protesters. After minutes of argument with security, hall executives, the gate was finally opened for Sodeindites to join the protest.
Sources disclosed that what actually caused the incident was, when a Marire resident “Balubite” screamed from sleep, and his room mates discovered over 100 bugs over his body and bed.
Protesters, who spoke under condition of anonymity claimed that “Sniper” had become a daily routine before sleep, one of such respondents claimed that his room mate was recently rushed to medical centre because he could not breathe properly because of the smell of “Sniper”.
It was however gathered that despite the situation in the hostels, students still receive lectures in their various departments.
The Dean, Students Affairs (DSA) of the University of Lagos, Professor Gabriel Babawale confirmed in an interview that there are bed bugs in some of the hostels in the school, but added that this would be addressed in due course.
According to him, It is now that we have that problem, but we will definitely address it.
The management has decided to provide new mattresses for the students in the hostels and we have discussed this with the leader of the student union of the school.
“We have fumigated the hostels twice this year, but we will still do it again to solve the problem”, he said.
He debunked the rumour that the school has been closed down as a result of the protest embarked upon by the students on the issue.
