Mr Wale Oyekoya, Chairman, Agro and Non-Oil Sector, of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), on Saturday urged state governments to formulate favourable policies for owners of farmlands.

Oyekoya made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, this will prevent a situation where governments would suddenly take over farmlands.

“At present, over 50 farmers have been displaced along the Lekki axis by the Lagos State Government, to make way for the construction of an airport.

“I am sure that the airport in the next 10 years will not see the light of the day.

“Yet, the business plans of over 50 farmers have been disrupted.

“Though, the government has paid compensation to the farmers and allocated lands to them in another area, we are being careful this time around.

“Without proper land and title documents, no farmer will move in to start anything in the new place, ‘’ the LCCI chief said.

According to Oyekoya, the state government has allocated another place around Epe to 30 other displaced farmers but the farmers are waiting for the land documents.

He said the documents were important to ensure the farmers did not fall victim again, as they have experienced in Lekki. (NAN)
