At least 20 candidates from the Northeast geopolitical zone are contesting to become the next national chairman of the oppositin Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A new PDP chairman is expected emerge next month, following the expiration of the tenure of the acting chairman, Chief Uche Secondus, who is to revert to his former status as deputy national chairman.
The Convener of the Restart PDP Project Committee, Nwosu Butches, who stated this at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, called on the zone to present credible candidates that could pilot the party to a stronger level.
He expressed confidence that the party would present a national chairman who has credibility and strong character for the position.
Butches explained that from September, the committee would begin wider consultations with critical stakeholders, including and most especially the G34 founding fathers.
He said, “We want to call on the North-East PDP stakeholders to present a candidate who will complete the tenure up to March of this incumbent National Working Committee to make sure they do their home work and give the party a credible candidate.”
Meanwhile, a socio-cultural group, the Northern Patriotic Front, flayed the PDP National Vice-Chairman, South-South, Dr. Cairo Ojuigboh, for allegedly misleading Nigerians on the centenary city project.
The group accused Ojuigboh of disparaging the character and person of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Pius Anyim, because he was sacked from his position as chairman of the Board of Nigeria Export Processing Authority by the former SGF.
The NPF Secretary, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Isa, stated that Ojuigboh had unwittingly allowed “his personal crisis into the public domain.”
The group urged the PDP chieftain to pay attention to the party in the South-South, which it said was falling apart under his watch.
