The Taraba Government on Monday appealed to the state university chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU) to call off its six months old strike.
Mr Anthony Jellason, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), in a chat with journalists in Jalingo, urged the lecturers to call off the strike in the interest of the state and the students.
Jellason said the new administration had inherited a huge debt of over N28 billion and needed some time to solve the numerous challenges facing the state.
“I want to use this medium to call on our citizens, particularly friends and relations of the lecturers, to help appeal to ASUU members.
“They should consider the financial condition of this government and in the interest of the state and the students call off the strike.
“The essence of setting up the university was to have our children in school, thus keeping them now at home is of no help to all,’’ he said.
Jellason said that the challenges in the state were not caused by the present government and urged ASUU to call off the strike and give the new administration some time to generate funds.
The SSG urged the people of the state to be patient and support the government of Gov. Darius Ishaku to deliver his campaign promises. (NAN)
