As the race for who emerges the Senate President in the 8th National Assembly continues, the South West caucus of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Senate and the newly – elected senators from the geo – political zone have resolved to adopt Senator Ahmad Lawan as their preferred candidate for the position.
The South West APC caucus in the Senate decided to adopt Lawan after a series of meeting in Abuja on Friday.
According to reports, 12 out of the 13 newly elected senators met and adopted Lawan, who is from the North-East geo – political zone, as their preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency.
A senator who was present at the meeting and didn’t want to be named said, “The 12 senators-elect with the exemption of Mr. Tayo Alasoadura, who was unavoidably absent at the meeting, argued for hours but at the end of the day, we came up with the choice of Lawan.
“It was generally agreed that we will formally communicate our position to the leadership of the APC just as our colleagues in the North-West had already done.”
He, however, explained that Yoruba senators had an issue with Lawan due to his alleged closeness to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, caucus in the Senate especially.
He further explained that the Yoruba senators believe that Senate President, David Mark, would have overwhelming influence on him Lawan if elected.
“Apart from being friendly with Mark, it was generally agreed that Lawan remained the best person for the job being a highly principled person.”
