The Special Crack Squad deployed to Edo, by the Inspector-General of Police to tackle cultism and violence-related crimes, has arrested 11 suspected leaders of cult groups in the State.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, in Abuja on Thursday, described the arrested suspects as “highly placed persons.”
It will be recalled that the I-G, Mr Solomon Arase, on Wednesday, dispatched the squad to Edo, amid concerns over violent crimes and activities of cultists.
According to NAN, the statement said the suspects, believed to be linked to recent cult-related killing, were arrested at different locations in the state on May 12.
According to the statement, the latest arrest brings to 56 the number of suspects apprehended in connection with cult related violence in the state.
The statement said the suspects were undergoing interrogation, and quoted the I-G as reassuring that no criminal would be spared, no matter how highly placed.
“The Police High Command appreciates the collaborative efforts of the members of the public, particularly in Edo state, on the achievement made so far by the Special Crack Squad’’, the statement added.
It said the police would continue to put adequate measures in place to ensure safety of lives and property nationwide.
