BENIN—A leader of the O’odua Peoples Congress, OPC, simply identified as Victor, and a commercial bus driver have been shot dead by gunmen at Uwelu and New Benin areas of Benin metropolis, Edo State.
The two were alleged to have been shot at close range. It was gathered that Victor, the OPC member, was shot and killed at 8p.m., on Saturday night on his way home at Uwelu quarters, after attending an end of the year activity of the organization in Benin.
They were said to have appraised the anti-crime efforts of the group across the state in the outgoing year and kudos and blames were shared among participants at the meeting.
The unidentified bus driver was shot in broad daylight at New Benin area of the ancient city, yesterday.
The driver was said to have been trailed to the busy new Benin Motor Park, where he was repeatedly shot on the head in presence of passengers.
The driver’s killing caused pandemonium in the area, as many of the passengers, traders and people around the area took to their heels.
Since the killing of the duo, many people, especially those living in the affected areas have become apprehensive, fearing that they may be in for a terrible cult clash during the yuletide.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Noble Uwoh, who confirmed the separate incidents to Vanguard yesterday in Benin, said investigations into them had commenced.
